The Stare

So, the “Maine Coon Stare” is a thing!

You may already know this, but Maine Coon cats love to stare at people.

Mom didn’t know it was a Maine Coon “thing”; she just thought I liked to stare, unblinking, at her for minutes on end.

Mom always takes pictures of me staring at her and sends them to her granddaughter, Sage. That’s because they have a thing about me staring at them. Then, recently, Sage told Mom that a vet told her that Maine Coons are notorious for staring at you!

Not that Mom didn’t believe Sage, but she looked it up anyway. And sure enough, it was true. So that’s one more reason why Mom thinks I have a fair amount of Maine Coon genes!

One thing I like to do is try to make as many different facial expressions as possible while staring at Mom. She says she takes all these pictures of me for the blog, because she can use them in my adventures with Panda. But if you saw how many photos she actually has, compared to how many she has used on this blog, you’d probably say she was just a crazy cat lady.

(Truth in blogging: Mom cropped out the arm of this chair that I enjoy scratching on.)

Fortunately, I have shelves on just about every windowsill in the house. It makes it much easier to stare at people, sometimes without them knowing it.

I even have shelves along the wall that I can climb on. From this vantage point, I can stare at pretty much anyone in the back living room.

Once in a while I like to play with whatever Mom is working on, in this case a piece of craft paper. But I had to stop and stare at her because she wasn’t paying that much attention to me.

Speaking of her not paying attention to me, one sure way to get her attention is to get on top of her crossword book. And then, of course, stare until she notices you.

I also like to stare at her while I help with household chores, like changing the sheets in the guest room.

It’s always fun being “vintage” in the front living room. It’s a great place to practice staring.

I’m happy to say that I can jump from the floor to the top of the computer chair, even if someone is sitting there. Then I just stare at them like, “What??”.

Sometimes it’s fun to hide while staring at people. Then when they notice you, they’ll either take a picture or possibly be a bit unnerved.

It’s likely that you aren’t supposed to be on the table, but sometimes you have to make an exception.

Like when someone is working on a craft project. That way they know you are supervising their every move.

Usually if you stare at someone long enough, you can put a “mind meld” on them and they just might get up and feed you or play with you.

But other times you have to do the “my food bowl is empty” stare. Even if it’s, umm, not really empty. Works every time.

And sometimes, because you love your mom so much, you want to stare at her as close up as you can.

“Here’s staring at you, kid!”

  1. Love those great big beautiful eyes. Many moons ago I had a Maine coon cat that I adopted while I was living in Latvia. Yes, this cat was born there but from a cat that must have been imported to Latvia from another place. Anyway, she was a real beauty with green eyes. We learned about her staring habit in an interesting way. Our kitchen like I suppose other people’s kitchens was a gathering place of sorts. My husband and I would sit there to talk and listen to the radio, chat with friends, or have some cocktails at the kitchen table, One late afternoon we suddenly realized we had not see our cat Cha Cha in a long time. If we were in the kitchen so was she. No cat we looked around the house and the garden. So we sat and tried to figure it all out and that was when I raised my eyes to the top of the refrigerator and looked into another pair of eyes. She was lying at the very back of the fridge by the wall and just calmly looking down at us. She’d never been there before so we had no reason to think she would be there. That was when we realized we were constantly being spied on,
