Life Hacks by Debra Kay

Would Be Influencer, Part 2

As an “up-and-coming” social media influencer, I thought it was time to share some “life hacks” with my faithful followers. And anyone else who has the (mis)fortune of stumbling across this blog unawares. First, we will talk about coffee.

As you may be aware, kitchen “coffee stations”, or “coffee bars” have become a “thing”. There are lots of ideas you can choose from for your coffee station, (just search on Pinterest) but I think you’ll be sufficiently edified and inspired by what I have to show you. First off, your coffee maker should match your kitchen. It’s easier to get a Keurig to match your decor than it is to paint your kitchen to match the Keurig, but the final decision is definitely your call.

Teaspoon offer from the Mason County Chronicle, 1910. See “Dainty Refreshments” for more info.

Second, you should have a collection of “vintage teaspoons” to stir your coffee with. They don’t have to be from your subscription to the 1910 Mason County Chronicle, as pictured in the above ad, but they should be close.

You should keep your vintage spoons in a cute coffee cup and as they get used, transfer them to another container, preferably a vintage sugar bowl.

Since you don’t want to put your vintage teaspoons in the dishwasher, what you do is wait until they are all used and then soak them in soapy water, right their tiny vintage bowl.

Meanwhile, your are still going to need something to stir your coffee with, and that’s where it comes in handy to have straws in your coffee station.

You may have thought the straws were for iced coffee, which they are, to some extent. But they also double as coffee stirrers until you get up the energy to actually wash and dry your vintage spoons.

And while we’re in the kitchen. let’s discuss s’mores.

If your surrogate granddaughters are over, you can actually make grilled cheese and s’mores at the same time. With adult supervision, naturally.

One final kitchen hack. You could spend $564.50 for this food storage container organizer, or you could just make a rule that no storage container can be put away without its lid on.

How easy is that? Plus, if your “tupperware” matches your kitchen, so much the better.

As far as housekeeping is concerned, every now and then you should clean off your bookshelves. How often this should be done is totally up to you. However, if you’re going to be a bona fide librarian, you should probably do this at least once a year.

Dusting the top of the books is, um, well, optional.

It’s also up to you whether or not to share this information with the rest of the blogosphere. But don’t worry, if they’re really your friends they won’t judge you.

A word of caution: cats really are liquid, and you never know when there will be one sliding over the top of the bookshelf to supervise. And/or to judge you.

Depending on how good a Nana you are, you may or may not have your granddaughter’s saddles stored at your house.

After she has cleaned them off on the patio, you’ll probably want to keep them in the guest room instead of outside.

The reason I’m telling you this is that of you ever can’t find your cat, he might be in the guest room playing “Louis L’Amour”.

But then again, he might just be in the front room under his red chair.

In case you’ve been thinking about making your sewing room closet into a “sewing nook”, just be advised that it’s probably not going to work.

It’s going to be too small for you to actually sew in there, and you’ll end up using it as storage for sewing related items. Which is actually okay, so don’t feel bad,

What you should do instead is get a turquoise sewing table and chair and put the dining room chair back in the dining room where it belongs. The sewing table and the chair will both require assembly, but that’s okay because your Amazon review will provide you with that much more blog material.

And, last but not least, if you’re a cat, the perfect hack for getting your human to pay attention to you is to sit right on top of her crossword puzzle. More about that later.

Hi Debbie. Some of your comments totally crack me up! Dusting the top of books is like dusting the top of framed photos. No one sees the top, right? Roasting marshmallows over the stove top…I can only imagine the marshmallows catching fire and melting onto the bottom of the burner and oh, the mess to clean up! How old is your Granddaughter?
    Love,
    Eileen
