The Front Room

You might remember…

That ever since I was little, I have helped Mom paint. The first thing she painted after I came to live with her was the “Talavera Kitchen”. That was when I discovered my natural artistic talent.

It was also when I discovered the step stool, which enabled me to get into the plants Mom had moved to keep me from, well, getting into. But I digress.

Then when I got bigger, she painted a couple of accent walls in the tiny room we’ve always called the prayer room. She took lots of photos of me helping with that, and she still hasn’t done a blog post about it. (Which is pretty hard to believe, but true.)

I like sleeping in there because that’s where the Grandpa Johnson quilt is. If you want to read more about this, check out “The Rest is History”.

I guess I should have seen this coming when paint chips started showing up by the light switch in the front room. But they’d been there for so long, I kind of just got used to them.

So you can imagine my surprise when, while dozing happily on my red chair yesterday, I began to notice that things on the wall opposite me were being moved around.

Okay, this calls for an inspection…

Gradually I began to figure it out. Mom was getting ready to paint something again!

Mom, seriously?

Well, at least she put the blue tape up. She has to make herself do that, because she really just wants to start painting, but she knows that’s not the right way to do it.

Wow, that’s a pretty “different” color for an accent wall! I didn’t actually say this, but it crossed my mind that if she didn’t like the way it turned out, it would be hard to paint over because it’s so dark. Deciding she probably knew what she was doing, I took another little nap.

When I woke up, I was amazed at how much she had gotten done!

It seemed as if she was leaving the bookshelf corner for last. I assumed it was because she knew it would be a pain to take everything off of it.

Oh yay!

Yes, yes, yes! Now we’re getting somewhere. I like that she took that fake cardboard backing off of it. It’s going to look lots better now.

After taking a few breaks Mom said the paint was dry enough to start putting the furniture back. She kept saying it was hard to get good photos because of the lack of light in the room and the glare from the front window, but I thought they came out pretty well.

I think the color goes with the our new “vintage” theme. Wait, can something be new and vintage at the same time?

In case you hadn’t noticed, I take my inspection duties very seriously.

Eventually it was time to put everything back on the bookshelf.

By now it was dark outside, so Mom had to turn the lamp to be able to see what she was putting on the shelves.

Naturally she got sidetracked looking at some of the books from the shelf. It seems as if her grandpa, Emil Johnson, had written notes and put some paper clips in some of them. She said to mention here, that, with all due respect to the memory of Grandpa Johnson, it’s not a good idea to use paper clips on important stuff. She had to bend them, because they were a little rusty, and too tight to just be slipped off without tearing the pages.

We both agreed that we liked the way the our front room looked with the lamp on.

So other than taking off the last pieces of blue tape from the ceiling and the far corner, Mom says she’s pretty much done with this wall. Notice she didn’t show any pictures of the other walls? That’s because it’s going to be a surprise…

  1. Wow! That looks so cool. I have pretty much the same colour for an accent wall in my kitchen. The other walls are a light golden colour. I wonder what you’re colour combo’s going to be? 🙂

It’s a good thing Foster is always helping out 😉 By the way, I love how vintage your house looks! The red walls are very bold and make the place look fantastic! Take care 🙂
